When the camping forecast changes
Have a practical wet-weather alternative and a clear decision about when to shorten or postpone the trip.
Make the decision before departure
Check the forecast and campground notices close to the trip. Consider the severity of the weather, road travel, your equipment and the experience of the group. Read the cancellation terms early enough to understand your options; a booking should not force an unsuitable trip.
Agree on what would make you postpone, leave early or change the accommodation. A clear decision is easier to make at home than late at night with wet gear and tired children.
Ordinary rain still changes the routine
Pack dry clothing and sleeping equipment so they stay separate from wet items. Keep essential arrival gear accessible, and plan a meal that does not require lengthy outdoor preparation. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions for shelter setup and ventilation.
Never use a stove, grill or other combustion appliance inside a tent. Choose a suitable permitted outdoor cooking arrangement or a no-cook alternative. Wet weather is a reason to simplify dinner, not improvise an enclosed cooking space.
Thunderstorms need proper shelter
The National Weather Service states that a tent does not protect against lightning. Plan access to appropriate shelter, such as a substantial enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle, and follow current official guidance. An open picnic shelter is not an equivalent substitute.
Do not set out on a walk merely because an indoor activity is planned afterward. Consider the whole journey and how conditions may change before you can return.
Give the day another purpose
Check whether White Memorial’s museum or another indoor venue is open and suitable for your group. Confirm admission arrangements before driving. An indoor visit can be enjoyable in its own right, but it is not a guarantee that surrounding roads or the campsite are suitable.
If you return home early, dry equipment before storage and keep a note of what to change next time. The packing checklist includes planning checks as well as gear, because the best alternative is often a better decision rather than another purchase.
