Before you goMake the campsite easy before making the itinerary ambitious.

Before Friday: remove the unknowns

Choose a campground and a site that fit your equipment, then read the confirmation from start to finish. Save the check-in location, arrival deadline and contact details. Check whether the pitch has the services you need rather than assuming that every site in a campground is identical.

Put the tent up at home first. Make sure its poles, pegs and rain cover are present, and work out where each person will sleep. Pack the items needed on arrival together so that bedding and lighting are not buried under everything else.

Friday: arrive with daylight to spare

Leave enough time to find the assigned pitch and settle in without rushing. Walk to the toilets and water point while it is light. Agree where children should wait while the adults unload, and keep the cooking area clear of foot traffic.

Make the first meal something familiar that takes little preparation. The aim is to enjoy the evening, not test a complicated new menu. Follow the campground’s food-storage instructions and do not make dinner depend on permission to light a fire.

Saturday: choose one outing

A short White Memorial walk or an unhurried Topsmead visit can be plenty for a first weekend. Check the route and journey from your actual campground. Leave time to return, dry or tidy equipment and prepare the evening meal.

Let the slowest person’s energy set the pace. If everyone is enjoying the campground, you do not need to leave just to complete a schedule.

Sunday: leave well

Pack in stages: loose items first, sleeping equipment when everyone is up, and shelter last when practical. Follow the site’s checkout and waste instructions. Before driving away, check the ground and the area around the table for small forgotten items.

At home, dry and clean equipment before storing it. Write down three changes for next time: something you missed, something you did not use and something that made the trip easier. Use the packing checklist as a starting point, not an instruction to buy everything.
